Soil moisture conditions reflected in observations from weather balloons

On March 12, 2021 By Ryan Teuling In Research

It has long since been known that soil moisture controls the partitioning of energy fluxes at the land surface, and that this partitioning affects the humidity and temperature of the air. A global synthesis of how soil moisture impacts the properties of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL), however, was missing. …

Soil moisture-temperature coupling behind climate shift in inner East Asia?

On November 27, 2020 By Ryan Teuling In Research

Lower soil moisture conditions are known to positively contribute to warmer temperatures, in particular during heatwaves. Inner East Asia is one of the regions where this coupling is likely significant. Writing in Science, Zhang and co-workers found that the recent coincidence of drought and hot temperatures is unprecedented in a …

About

drought.NL is a platform for research on drought processes, quantification, and its impacts on water resources, agriculture, and natural ecosystems. It serves as the informal homepage of the climate hydrology team at Wageningen University.

The climate hydrology team is lead by Ryan Teuling, associate professor in the Hydrology and Quantitative Water Management Group at Wageningen University. Our research focusses on the interaction between hydrological and atmospheric processes, from diurnal to climate change timescales.
